Mayte Breed
Mayte Breen (b. 1997) is a photographer based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. She graduated from the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague, in 2024, after earning a bachelor’s degree in Future Planet Studies with a major in Biology from the University of Amsterdam. Growing up in the small village of Egmond aan den Hoef, Mayte often feels overwhelmed by the fast pace of city life. Photography has become her way of exploring and making sense of the everyday.
Mayte’s work captures the subtle interactions between humans and their environment, including artificial representations in urban settings, encounters with plants and animals, and moments glimpsed through humid windows. Her images evoke a sense of calm and reflection, achieved through thoughtful composition and the use of various media—photography, moving images, installations, and bookmaking. She seeks to highlight the moments in time that often go unnoticed by others.
From 2022 to 2024, Mayte developed her graduation project, I See a Melting Window, which was exhibited at the Royal Academy of Art in July 2024. Between October 2023 and May 2024, she collaborated with the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) on Closed Cycles, presenting the results through an exhibition and workshop at the NWO Life 2024 scientific conference in Egmond aan Zee. The exhibition Flowing Forward in Closed Cycles was on view at Paradise, a venue created by West Den Haag and KABK, from June 28 to July 28. Additionally, she worked with Museum Night on a commissioned project.
