Josquin van Elburg

Josquin van Elburg, born in 2002 in Dieren, Netherlands, has a deep commitment to exploring and understanding visual languages through his art. He completed his first study of Fine Art at Artez Arnhem, where he embraced a rigorous practice inspired by Rodin’s advice to Rilke: “Work, always work.” Van Elburg’s artistic journey at Artez broadened his horizons beyond painting to include sculpting and costume-making, yet his deep affinity for painting remained central. His work is characterized by an investigative approach, where making art is synonymous with researching and understanding the world. Through this lens, Van Elburg’s creations serve as a cartography of meanings, mapping out the systems that underpin human interaction and perception.

For Best of Graduates 2024, Josquin van Elburg presents a collection that bridges art-historical forms with contemporary techniques, creating a dialogue between past and present. Van Elburg’s work juxtaposes elements from ancient Greek art, Renaissance traditions, and modern influences such as Cézanne and Matisse, alongside cinematic references from Fellini and Antonioni. This blend results in a rich array of visual languages that explore both the harmony and dissonance of human experience.
