Martijn Verzijl

Martijn Verzijl (1999) is a Dutch contemporary artist and ceramist based in ‘s-Hertogenbosch. A graduate of St.Joost School of Art & Design in 2024, Verzijl translates life stories into ceramic vessels. His education includes graphic design from Grafisch Lyceum Rotterdam and a minor in Masterpieces of Western Culture from Utrecht University of Applied Sciences, where he also earned a teaching diploma in history. In addition to his ceramic practice, Verzijl is a published author, with three books to his name. His work has been featured in various exhibitions, including the Limburg Biennale at Marres in Maastricht.

For Best of Graduates 2024, Martijn  presents a collection of ceramic works that explore themes of childhood, loss, and the passage of time. Verzijl’s ceramics act as “story carriers,” blending ancient symbolism with contemporary narratives. His vases, often inscribed with poems and texts, reveal intimate reflections on life, mirroring the ancient Greeks and Romans’ approach to storytelling through vessels.
