Mounir Eddib

Mounir Eddib, born February 10, 1995, in Waterschei, Genk, Belgium, is a Moroccan-Belgian artist. Growing up in a working-class neighborhood influenced by abandoned coal mines, he draws from his background of intercultural exchange and family histories. His artistic journey began with vocational training as a refrigeration technician, where he learned welding, a skill he now uses in his art. Inspired by his father’s drawing and Bob Ross’s painting shows, he co-founded the grassroots organization Jungle in 2016, which evolved into The Building Genk, an inclusive art collective.

He pursued a BA in Fine Arts (2019-2024), during which he developed his unique painting practice. He also worked part-time as the coordinator of Bonnefanten Museum’s youth department. His contributions to the Fine Arts graduation expo earned him the Gilbert de Bontridder Prize, the Buning Brongers Prize, and a nomination for the Henriette Hustinx Prize, culminating in his graduation Summa Cum Laude.

For Best of Graduates 2024, Mounir presents a series of paintings that reflect his deep connection to post-industrial landscapes and his cultural heritage. Eddib’s work is heavily inspired by the intercultural exchanges, historical narratives, and cosmological traditions of the Sahrawi people. His pieces are autobiographical, yet they resonate universally, depicting the haunting presence of personal and collective memories in the mining sites of the Limburgian borderlands.
