Sam Werkhoven

How can a material substance, such as paint, be transformed into something ethereal? The work of Sam Werkhoven derives from his fascination for light. In his work, he responds to his predecessors, who intrigue him. The work of another often provides an occasion for the creation of work. Yet, the other painter, or the work of the other painter is not the main focus. Rather, Werkhoven creates a dialogue between past and present, using subtle references to art history.

For example, within his series of skies, Werkhoven connects himself to the Dutch painters in the 17th century, who became fascinated by the Dutch light. By presenting air and light in different forms, his work is also about the notion of painting in itself. Meanwhile, he plays with the literal space depicted. By constantly zooming in and out on his works, he creates a layered context, in which his paintings are responding to each other, to history, and to materiality.
